Wave 1049 Online is an independently owned, local Internet radio station, formerly known as Wave 104.9, which served, primarily, the Ridgeland / Bluffton / Beaufort / Hilton Head area in South Carolina, with a few hardy fans in the Coastal Empire. Wave is an Adult Alternative station, so it sounds smart, like alternative radio stations did back in the 90s, though we're not stuck in the 90s. We play a lot of new music, as well as favorites from as far back as the 70s. Click on Artists, above, for a list of some of our featured artists. As a radio station, Wave 104.9 had a relatively short life - less than two years, before its transmitter was sold-off by its former owner in November, 2006. Its new owner, JB Broadcasting, flipped the station to a rather unique format, Beach, Boogie, Blues and Some Jazz, and named the station John FM. It was a fun radio station, well-appreciated by its new fans, and totally unlike any of the cookie-cutter radio stations which currently dot the local landscape. Fate would strike again in January of 2010, however, as 104.9 changes hands again to become Hilton Head's Best Music, 104.9 The Surf. John FM has morphed into The Large Time Network, this in March of 2010. Wave's third and final program director, Jim DeLara, continued to work for Wave's former owner, Triad Broadcasting, as a support engineer, IT director, and 7-Midnight air talent on one of the other stations, 103.1 The Drive. He continued in those positions for about 2 years, leaving the company in late 2008. Wave 104.9 had been programmed previously by Gene Murrell and Bob Neumann, both of whom have moved-on to new challenges in new cities. After leaving Triad, JD pondered his future, doing occasional IT-related jobs in the Savannah area, re-connecting with Chuck 'Boom-Boom' Cannon after a few months, who had, until recently, been program director for the former Oldies 98.3, a legacy radio station which used to be pretty big around these parts... Chuck had been researching the feasibility of an Internet radio station, which JD agreed to build and support. During the construction phase of Savannah's Cool Oldies, JD decided to start two companies, Savannah Radio Online (SRO), whose purpose is to provide technical, marketing, and sales support for its member stations, and Wave 1049 Online, to continue the evolution of the Wave experience for the enjoyment of, primarily, the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, although the station can be heard all over the world. Savannah Radio Online currently supports 3 online radio stations and 1 online video station, although it owns none. Each of the member stations is independently owned and operated by local professionals with years of experience in the Savannah / Hilton Head radio broadcast markets. SRO expects to grow into a major local broadcasting operation as the Internet continues to evolve into the dominant broadcast medium, soon to surpass over-the-air broadcasting. The Internet, as such, provides a greater diversity of content than could ever be found in the more limited AM/FM broadcast spectrum. A brave, new world of broadcasting is on the horizon, and we're thrilled to be a part of it. Our sister stations: |
